My sweet memories are going to Geneva Hall, outside Waco, in the 60’s with my parents to see live country artists: Ernest Tubb, The Browns, Hank Jr, and Ray Price, to name a few. I was 10-17. I moved away for college, had my career, so I hadn’t been back there in 53 years. We’ve retired in Waco now, so a few weeks ago my husband and I went there for a Catholic Church fundraiser. It had not changed at all: same bandstand, same dance floor, same beer bars. As I sat eating my fried chicken dinner, I felt tears running down my cheeks as I recalled getting there early to sit by the band, dancing with my daddy, and hearing Ernest sing “Waltz Across Texas” and feature Cal Smith and Jack Green. But Ray Price’s “Danny Boy” was haunting. For a few minutes on that Sunday, “time slipped away”, and those “sweet memories” of the musical nights with my family magically reimagined themselves.
